Registration of business

If you are working as a self-employed carer in Austria for the first time, you must register your business with the competent district administrative authority of the business location - the municipal authority of the city, district authority, or the competent municipal district office in Vienna.

The following documents must be submitted in the original or as a certified copy/translation for the business registration:

  • Valid identity card or passport
  • Birth certificate
  • Confirmation of registration
  • Criminal record certificate (not older than three months).

When you register your business, you automatically become a member of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (Wirtschaftskammer Österreich (WKO)) and must pay a chamber contribution (an annual fee). If you obtain a business licence, you are also automatically registered with the Social Insurance for the Self-Employed (SVS) for social and health insurance and must pay quarterly contributions. You must also notify the tax office of the commencement of your commercial activity, which will assign you a tax number.

The first business registration is free of charge.
